There are places you have to earn. Karimunjawa is one of them. After several days exploring Java, we still had to cross the sea for nearly five hours before reaching this archipelago, whose beauty everyone raved about. Little did we imagine that this crossing would be almost as memorable as our arrival.

A crossing that tested our nerves

We had been warned.

The slow ferry was nothing like a cruise.

And indeed...

The five-hour crossing felt long.

The seats were basic, space was limited, and there wasn't much to eat for breakfast.

The children, however, were bursting with energy.

It was impossible to ask them to sit still for so long.

As if that weren't enough, Anaïs quickly started to feel seasick.

The Java Sea also decided to remind us that it could be temperamental.

The boat swayed regularly.

At that moment, only one question crossed our minds:

"Is it really worth it?"

Then, everything changed

A few tens of minutes before arrival, someone advised us to go out on the deck.

And then...

The landscape completely changed.

The deep blue of the sea gradually gave way to an almost unreal turquoise water.

On the horizon, the first islands covered with lush vegetation slowly emerged.

The contrast was striking.

In a few moments, we completely forgot the hours spent on the boat.

We immediately understood why Karimunjawa is often called the Maldives of Indonesia.

An arrival out of time

As soon as we disembarked, the atmosphere was completely different from that of Java.

Here, everything seemed to slow down.

Our driver first took us to a small warung, one of those typical Indonesian family restaurants.

After several hours of crossing, this simple meal almost felt like a feast.

We then drove to our accommodation: The Secret.

Perched on a hill overlooking the jungle, the place offered a spectacular view of the island.

Our host, Hari, greeted us with iced lemon tea.

Three dogs ran around him.

Their mission?

To scare away the overly curious monkeys who sometimes invite themselves around the houses.

The welcome was simple, warm, sincere.

At the end of the day, we headed to the seaside.

The sun slowly set.

The sky changed from yellow to orange, then to deep red.

The sea became a vast mirror.

For several minutes, no one spoke.

We simply observed the spectacle.

Looking back, it was probably one of the most beautiful sunsets of our entire trip.

These moments are impossible to fully photograph.

They are to be lived.

A night in the heart of the jungle

This first night on the island will also remain etched in our memories.

We slept under a mosquito net.

Around us, only the sounds of the jungle accompanied our sleep.

The contrast with the honking of Jakarta was almost unreal.

Exploring Karimunjawa by scooter

The next morning, we rented a scooter.

It's undoubtedly the best way to discover the island.

The roads wind between hills, pass through peaceful villages, and regularly lead to white sand beaches.

Marion and Martin loved it.

The simple act of riding among the coconut trees became an adventure.

We stopped whenever a landscape caught our eye.

In Karimunjawa, there's no real itinerary.

You explore at your own pace.

On several beaches, we met French and Swiss travelers.

Conversations started naturally.

Everyone shared their itinerary, discoveries, and advice.

We were the only ones traveling with two young children.

This sparked a lot of questions...

...but also a lot of admiration.

As everywhere since our arrival in Indonesia, the locals continued to give a very special welcome to Marion and Martin.

The smiles, the gestures of welcome, and the benevolent curiosity of the locals made every encounter unique.

Unforgettable snorkeling

While the family enjoyed the beach, I went to explore the seabed.

The water was exceptionally clear.

Very quickly, multicolored fish appeared.

I encountered several trumpet fish, tiny shrimp perfectly camouflaged in the corals...

...and especially a stonefish.

Perfectly camouflaged.

Almost invisible.

A fascinating encounter... but also a reminder that you always have to be careful when moving in a natural environment.

What we would do differently

Looking back...

We would have stayed longer.

Karimunjawa is much more than a seaside stopover.

It's a destination where it's good to slow down, enjoy the passing of time, and discover Indonesia differently.

Three or four extra days would certainly not have been too much.

There are trips that are experienced at full speed.

And then there are places that force you to slow down.

Karimunjawa is one of them.

Here, we rediscovered what we like most when we travel: taking our time, observing, meeting people, and simply enjoying the present moment.
